It is suicide, domestic violence, police brutality, mass shootings, gang violence, and local shootings. There is the *seemingly* easy task of regulating who has guns to prevent these things. (Provided we show upwardly at the polls and vote.) So at that place is the harder task of preventing someone from wanting to injure someone else. Perhaps the best thing you can practise is invest in youth, considering support systems matter. Besides, maybe instead of dedicating your novel to MSD, dedicate it to those affected by gun violence. This was amazing to read and I'm so grateful for, not only the kids of Marjory Stone Douglas and everything they've done up to this indicate, but how they brand sure to shine the light on others who have non received the same corporeality of media attention.

This book functions one-half memoir and half manifesto for who David and Lauren Hogg are as people and how they each reacted to the Parkland, Florida shooting in different ways. I loved how candid this book is - it about reads more like a blog post that the siblings have written up together. They, and their friends, are all clearly very intelligent, critical thinkers with an amazing corporeality of snark for NRA-lobbyists who think to suggest otherwise. The other fantastic aspect of their writing this book, is that they fully admit white privilege, classism, and different factors that take immune them to gain so much media attention while others who take argued the same, do not.

It gives background, but too provides a lot of encouragement, the final chapter being a eleven stride manifesto for countering "learned helplessness." Information technology'south a difficult book to read because, in a way, it'due south still unbelievable that this is the globe nosotros alive in (in relation to gun violence, non fifty-fifty going into what'southward happening at the edge, or police brutality!), but information technology IS.

Definitely a must-read for literally every unmarried human, but specially Americans. I've been abstaining from rating books, but since it seems that this book has been targeted by a modest number of people who are obviously NRA-toads, I made an exception.

What'southward information technology nearly?
David and Lauren Hogg talk virtually the things they experienced in the Parkland shooting and why gun rights are horrible.

Why non 1 star?
Lauren explains what information technology was similar for her on the twenty-four hour period of the shooting, that office was interesting and very well written and so I'll give this volume that.

Cons:
This book is for the most part horribly written. Not only does it have a few general flaws in the writing at present and and then but it's often like reading a poorly washed news broadcast (example: "I'll have Lauren do this office." (Lauren writes a fleck) "Dorsum to you, David" (non worded that way but that kind of thing)).
This book is full of and so much slow filler that has NOTHING to do with what this book is about.
This part might be a bit of a nitpick simply a lot of the times if a number "1" is shown it looks like an upper example "I" (non a straight line blazon of upper example "I" but the other kind, I know information technology gets confusing). Like I said, it's a nitpick but it collection me basics the entire time.
The political commentary is then poorly written. I don't but say this being someone who dislikes gun control just for case, a lot of this book does this thing of talking well-nigh something entirely different than all suddenly, for no reason, time to talk shit about Trump. I don't care if yous're a Trump supporter or not, that is awful writing.
David is such a fucking hypocrite (now Seether'southward stuck in my head). A skillful example is when he talks nigh respecting gun owners and gun rights when a big part of this volume is promoting March For Our Lives which is against gun rights and then he continues to talk shit about gun rights supporters (this obviously includes most gun owners). Like I said, hypocritical.
The final affiliate of this book pissed me off big fourth dimension. There'south a list of people involved in various shootings, people that this book says we should never forget which makes sense merely those lists include the names of the shooters. A big reason these things happen is murderers wanting fame then putting their proper name in this book and maxim that they should e'er exist remembered is fucked up. On the off gamble that David and/or Lauren Hogg ever see this review I would like to say this: if you really give a fuck virtually stopping violence, mayhap don't requite murderous cunts the publicity they seek.
David Hogg reveals a plan on how to end gun violence and it'southward and so flawed that in gild to explain how flawed I'd have to write a whole special section in this review called something like...

Why David'southward gun law ideas suck:
Funding for gun violence research- OK, this idea doesn't hateful too bad I suppose however a lot of people would get mad because gun violence research that is already done bear witness that more than gun laws make things worse.
Digitalization of ATF records- Am I actually meant to believe that a regime organization like the ATF does all their shit on pen and paper? Come on.
Universal background checks- Well, purchasing a gun requires a lot of background checking every bit information technology is about of the time then...
Ban high capacity magazines- First of all, it would not relieve lives similar this book claims. 2d, depending on your reload speed this wouldn't practice a damn matter. Some people take a good 10 minutes to reload their AR-15 while others can burn, reload and beginning firing again with their lever action that doesn't even have a magazine.
Attack weapons ban- First of all, "set on weapon" is a bullshit term that anti-gun people made up. 2d, the 2nd amendment is so people have the right to bear ANY artillery then the fact that that whatsoever gun is illegal is crap. Third, information technology'due south there so gun owners can rise up if the authorities becomes tyrannical (to quote the Declaration of Independence "whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to change or to abolish it, and to found new regime").
Funding for intervention programs- Well, society equally a whole tends to discourage IRL violence so...
Reddish flag laws- Owning a gun is a right, not a privilege so nobody should always have their gun taken.
Blocking people with a history of domestic violence- Every bit fucked up as it may seem, the previous statement applies for that besides. Also, there's a lot of laws that are meant to do this now.
A federal solution to stop gun trafficking- Gun trafficking is illegal and the government commonly tries to brand sure illegal stuff doesn't happen.
Safe storage laws- Anyone with common sense knows to keep their gun is a safe place. Sure, there's some who don't exercise this stuff properly but I know a lot of gun owners and all of them make sure their guns are kept somewhere safe.

Overall:
This book is stupid as hell. If it weren't for the one short bit that was well written in affiliate ane, this would be getting a i star review from me. This volume is a mess of bad writing and flawed politics.
Would I want to read a book every bit awful as this ane? #NeverAgain

Honestly, what more can I say about this volume other than information technology is an eloquently insightful and intelligent read that discussed the background of the March for Our Lives motion every bit well as the organization'south hopes for the future.

Furthermore, I applaud David and Lauren's fantabulous job at narrating this volume; you can hear how determined they are to create change.

This book was powerful and had some important discussions. The writing was very direct forwards and you lot can really experience pathos for the lives that were lost. This is a non-fiction story nigh David and Lauren Hogg who are both survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High Schoolhouse shooting in Parkland Florida. On February fourteen, 2018, many lives were lost in a schoolhouse shooting in Florida. This book gives both the survivor'due south perspectives and their personal experience when the shooting was going on. They likewise have done a significant amount of campaigning since, which is as well discussed.

I think this book was really interesting and informative. For a very small book, this definately achieves what information technology is supposed to. I am certain at that place are more not-fiction books about Parkland that go into greater depth nigh the shooting in more length. Overall this volume was informative and is extremely important for people to read. Specially if you lot alive in America this would be such an important book to read to get together some more insight into school shootings. This book also did discuss some political topics and gun laws. I personally appreciated the sections nigh their perspectives during the shootings and the groundwork to that. Though talking nearly the guns laws is important information technology is also very controversial. So depending on if you desire to read a bit almost that or not, but know it is at that place slightly.

The volume closes with a long, advisedly detailed list of all schoolhouse shootings thus far, starting with Columbine High School in April of 1999. This well-researched chapter includes the names and ages of all victims, and something personal nigh each of them, to assistance the states think them.

Though the Hogg siblings outline a 10-betoken common sense strategy for gun buying to coexist with man safety, this book is not political in nature. It is a social issues book, relevant to all Americans who value human lives.

All throughout this book this immature human seemed very narcissistic. I could hardly stomach it. To some extent with teens it's normal, teens love to tell you lot what they're excited about, and how good they are at things. But this was certainly at a deeper and disturbing level. It's clear that our schoolhouse systems are churning out activist who can march, dirge and become emotional, but not Americans who can recollect and reason.

It's no wonder this kid and his coiffure went immediately to politics. They've been trained to be like this. Attacking an arrangement (the NRA) that had aught to with the evil incident that took place in his schoolhouse. Mr. Hogg did this because he's been trained to do so. As he talks about prior to the shooting they had been discussing the NRA in class and how "powerful" it is. (no dubiousness a leftist instructor merely shared a one sided view)

It seems strange to me that there has never been whatever anger towards anyone but the NRA. No anger at the adults/agencies in his own community that failed them both before that mean solar day and on that tragic day.

I was too amazed that this child only learned in school that the 2nd amendment practical to the formation of militias. He certainly hasn't read the founding fathers own words on the topic of gun ownership. Hogg talked near his experience with Emma G. and how they discussed how you lot should honey those who are unlike from you, but he seems to non practice what he preaches one bit. Equally leaders would achieve out to the swain and he'd take nothing to exercise with them. Instead of trying to work with politicians he just demonized them. He seems to talk of love, just God forbid if you don't completely agree with leftist only solutions.

Much of the content simply didn't seem genuine. Like he added details into his thinking that didn't actually exist on that day. Just my impression. As well I'm only not shocked by his worldview. It's exactly what I would expect from a kiddo who's been trained by liberal teachers and consumed liberal talking points from Vox, Vice, John Oliver etc. (as he mentions them is this book)

I'chiliad merely non shocked that he's come to the conclusions he'due south come to. Nor how he treats others on the other side of the problems. He'southward just as rigid equally anyone he criticizes. But I think at this point in his life he'south to in love with himself to discover.

I give this a 1 star because most of the content was rubbish. Nigh the end he had a few good ideas for how to solve some problems. But that'southward most it. Given his unwillingness to receive olive branches or offer them those few productive ideas will never bear fruit. Too his sister writes in this booklet as well and you actually do get an idea of how emotional and scary an incident like this can be to a teen. (or really anyone)

I read this in the spirit of understanding. As I've really been turned off by him and his crew since the CNN "town hall." As the teens seemed incredibly coached with talking points. I do think adults have influenced these kids to say some of the things they've said. Because later on all yous can't question them or offer a rebuttal because they're simply kids right? While he has my sympathy for being function of an awful event, he doesn't have my understanding for his actions following the event.

I snuck out of my theatre class every mean solar day for nearly an unabridged semester doing this, and probably the virtually of import thing I learned was that there was no simple answer to any of this, at least none that a kid about to flunk out of loftier-school theatre was gonna be able to effigy out.
And however there was David Hogg on CNN talking about how elementary all this was and how he'd figured information technology all out from watching John Oliver and Vice News.

Which brings me back to my main complaint about the actual volume: equally an actual teen really trying to proceeds an insight into what I should be doing to assist prevent schoolhouse shootings, I accept aught interest in the Tv set habits of a frankly unlikable, pretentious kid the likes of whom comes a dime a dozen in any public high schoolhouse AP Govt. class. That's what this book is: a for-profit booklet with a ridiculously disproportionate ratio of pages devoted to what political shows are good, what D. Hogg watched on TV before the set on, what he watched on TV the day of the attack, what he watched in TV subsequently the attck, how much BBC One he and his friends watched together and based their policy on, etc.

If you experience like reading this book, at least get information technology from the library. Spend the money you lot'd pay for it on a donation to Sandy Hook promise.

But that'southward also what bothers me a little bit virtually it. I am all for someone telling their truth and admitting to their past mistakes, but David Hogg seems to be preemptively confessing his sins so that at that place are no skeletons left to uncover when he runs for office. And honestly, nosotros were all assholes when nosotros were in junior loftier - but in that location's something nigh an xviii yr old admitting that he was a cocky donkey when he was "younger" that just doesn't feel quite necessary. Child, you lot have a lot more mistakes to make - don't put so much force per unit area on yourself to think that stupid, young mistakes are in your by.

This starting time mitt business relationship of the events is as detailed every bit it can exist given how recently the events occurred. But this isn't meant to focus on the tragedy, but rather the backwash and how this movement #neveragain grew.

As a instructor, I found the vocalisation of David and Lauren honest and mature. I am proud to know that there are teens that take the passion and the energy to forge a path of alter.

In the back of the book is a list of mass shootings in educational institutions outset in 1999 with Columbine. There is a list of those lost and information technology is middle-breaking.

Put your politics away and read this short book past two of the survivors of the Parkland shooting and organizers for March for Our Lives (All proceeds from the book go to that organization).
The book starts by giving some background on the Hogg'south lives. Their story is fairly well-known: they are white middle-class children of an FBI amanuensis and teacher who found in Parkland an excellent school system. Equally a upshot, David and Lauren are mature, intelligent children, pretty normal, with the usual teenage introspection and foibles. February 14th changed their lives forever.
I was impressed by their ability to lay out facts and their utilize of social media. David talks about information technology hither: "we are growing up in a fourth dimension when technology gives us the confidence to assume that we tin can do things and figure out the globe in means that it hasn't been figured out before." They are honest enough to talk about the privilege they take, better teachers, equipment, a variety of classes, etc that take enabled them to speak out in a way others from less advantaged backgrounds often can't.
They are not gratuitous in writing about the shooting itself, but in that location are moments that simply catch your centre: Lauren speaking of the four friends she lost or this quote from when her mom took her to counseling, "I nonetheless began to tell my story, which was hard enough, merely harder notwithstanding was sitting in that chair and watching the therapists weeping." The last section of the volume is pages and pages listing the many school shooting victims since Columbine.
They lay out a common-sense 10 point strategy that respects both gun owners and the inherent right of people to live. Their parents must be so proud of them all, not just David and Lauren, but all the rest who are working to brand a divergence. As it says in the book, they are learning to change the world by presuming that they tin.

The stories about the friends who were taken from them volition suspension your heart. The final chapter listing the victims of school shootings since Columbine is difficult to read, especially the section most Sandy Hook.

The book presents simple and reasonable proposals to accost the gun violence epidemic. Before you write off March for Our Lives equally a ploy to accept everyone'south guns away, requite the proposals a off-white reading. They preserve gun rights and uphold the 2nd Amendment while keeping weapons away from dangerous individuals and protecting public condom.

#NeverAgain was written past 2 teenagers who were forced to become wise beyond their years. They write with an sensation of themselves, the issues they are tackling, and the larger social problems that exacerbate the trouble. Regardless of your position on the event, this timely and crucial book is worth reading.
